What is New Jack Swing?
New Jack Swing was the sound that dominated R&B from the late 1980s into the early 1990s. Pioneered by producers Teddy Riley and Babyface, it fused the energy of hip-hop beats with the melody and soul of classic R&B. The result was a harder, more rhythmic take on soul — still warm, still emotional, but with a groove that demanded you move.
Artists like Bobby Brown , Janet Jackson , Johnny Gill , Shanice and Color Me Badd brought the sound to the mainstream. It was the soundtrack to a generation — and it still sounds incredible today.
